Morningstar® Sieve

1. Create a sieve using Principia®.
2. Select a modest number of funds, in most cases less than 100.

There is no FastTrack limitation on the number of funds exported but some versions of Principia limit to exports to 100 funds at a time..

3. Select all rows

Note: The rows must contain the Ticker column so that FastTrack can match up the selections.

4. Select export

5. Export to an easy to access folder, not the Morningstar® default User folder which is many folders deep and hard to find.

6. Within FastTrack, right-click the issue list and select load

7. Select the name of the file that you exported from Morningstar®.

Analyze with FastTrack

All the exported funds are in the issue list to the right of the chart.

This chart shows the average of the funds exported. Or you may like to look at them individually.

In this case, the top ranked funds on 3/30/01 had an outstanding history, but their managers reverted to the default of becoming an S&P 500 index fund during the bear market.. 

Note the essentially flat relative strength chart (lower half of the screen) showing that the average 5-Star fund acted just like a S&P 500 Index fund from3/30/ 2001 to2003.

December 1997 Morningstar® 5-Star Survivors

The great majority of funds in the December 1997 5-Star ranking survived to date. Most that were discontinued suffered from fund company mergers rather than horrible performance.

The red line is an equally weighted average of these funds since MS choose them, not a bad performance.

HOWEVER, The yellow line would have been achieved by rebalancing quarterly using FT4Web's Momentum model on the same set of funds.
